# Brand — where the soul gets carved into the thing.

##  Geppetto's Workshop is where we carve.

Geppetto was the only figure in Western literature whose entire job was “taking an inert block of wood, carving it, naming it, giving it a voice, and watching it walk around the world on its own.” That is, structurally, what CPG brand-building is. Every brand starts as something inert — an idea, a formulation, a whitespace, a founder's stubborn dream — and either gets carved into something that can stand on its own two feet at retail, or gets shipped as a decoration that nobody remembers a week after the launch party.

# What we do here:

## **New CPG brand exploration.**

From whitespace analysis to name to positioning to the world the brand lives in. We start by naming **the Alternative-To** — the product the shopper is currently reaching for in your category, and the reason they're reaching for it — and we carve outward from there. Category read. Competitive read. Whitespace read. Naming. Positioning statement. Doctrine. Voice. Visual direction brief for the design team. The whole architecture of a brand that will still be recognizable in five years.

## **Existing CPG brand repositioning.**

For brands that have drifted, plateaued, or been quietly overtaken on the shelf while nobody was looking. We diagnose what went silent — usually the Alternative-To changed underneath the brand (a new formulation entered the category, a private label caught up, a claim structure shifted, a shopper's daily routine moved) and the brand kept talking as if the old default were still the default. Then we re-carve. Sometimes this looks like a full rebrand. Sometimes it looks like a two-degree course correction that nobody outside the boardroom would notice, and everybody inside the boardroom is relieved to have named out loud.

# What comes out of the Workshop:

- **A Brand Doctrine** — the load-bearing document. Not a mood board. The written architecture that every downstream decision references.
- **A Position statement** you can put on a wall.
- **A Naming and voice system** — how the brand talks, and doesn't.
- **A Design brief** for whichever agency or in-house team executes the visual work — with enough substance that they can't drift.
- **A crisp Alternative-To** you can defend in a board meeting.
- **The refusal list** — the moves the brand will not make, on the record, so that six months from now when somebody proposes them, you have the receipts.

## What we do NOT do in Geppetto's Workshop:

- It isn't a naming workshop. Naming is a downstream output, not the point.
- It isn't a logo project. Logos come after doctrine. Doctrine comes first, or the logo is decoration.
- It isn't an agency retainer. We hand you a doctrine and a brief, and you (or an agency you love) execute the visual work with clarity you didn't have before.
- It isn't for brands whose position is "we're the cheaper version of X." That's not a position; it's a place in a lineup, and a good repositioning will tell you that first.

# How Geppetto's Workshop connects to the rest of the heliosphere

- The Workshop is downstream of the **[Mahna](https://www.myns2.com/mahna-rpm)** — the strategic engine tells the Workshop what the brand needs to be.
- The Workshop is upstream of the **[Still-Room](https://www.myns2.com/mrs-beetons-still-room)** — the brand doctrine tells the formulation work what the product actually has to be, so we don't build a beautiful brand around the wrong recipe.
- The Workshop hands off to **[Appleseed's Orchard](https://www.myns2.com/appleseeds-orchard)** for execution — either our operators run the launch, or your team does, or both.

# How the Mahna RPM drives Geppetto's Workshop

The Workshop does not carve in a vacuum. Every brand that walks out of this room started as an output of the **[Mahna RPM Methodology](https://www.myns2.com/mahna-rpm)** — the strategic engine that lives at the center of the practice — and every chisel we pick up is chosen because the Mahna told us which chisel the brand needed.

## The three coordinates of the Mahna come in the door with the block of wood:

The prescience the Mahna provides is what makes the Workshop's work load-bearing instead of decorative. A brand carved without a plan is a mood board with a logo on it. A brand carved with a plan is an object that walks around at retail on its own two feet, does its job, and comes back the next day for another shift.

## The Mahna tells us what the brand has to *do*. The Workshop tells us what the brand has to *be*. Neither room works alone.

![Resolutionism. MYNS2](https://www.myns2.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Resolutionism.%20MYNS2.jpg?width=800&height=737&name=Resolutionism.%20MYNS2.jpg "Resolutionism. MYNS2")

## **A brand carved without Resolutionism is decoration.**

It may sell for a quarter. It may sell for a year. But the seams are already in the wood, and the moment the market tilts, the brand splinters at exactly the places we could have carved differently and didn't.

## **A brand carved with Resolutionism is furniture.**

It gets used, it gets loved, it gets handed down, and it holds its shape through weather nobody at the launch meeting could have predicted.

## That is the whole difference, and it is the reason this Geppetto’s Workshop exists.

# **How the Workshop is steeped in Resolutionism — and why that's the whole game**

Every brand carved in this Workshop has to pass a doctrine test before we start naming, before we start writing, before we sketch the first visual direction brief. The test is **[Resolutionism](https://www.myns2.com/resolutionism-for-business)** — the operating discipline behind the whole practice — and its job on the Workshop bench is to make sure the brand can still be defended on the day some smart competitor, journalist, or retailer buyer decides to look at it from a bad angle.

#### The test asks three questions of every brand:

- **Does the brand require an axiom violation to work?** Meaning: does the story only balance if the shopper doesn't know something? Manufactured deficit ("we're premium because we're expensive"), dark patterns ("this label is designed to be scanned in three seconds and misread on the fourth"), laundered extraction upstream ("we don't put where the ingredients come from on the pack"), or a claim structure that reads clean at eye level and falls apart at knee level. If the answer is yes, we don't carve it. We say so out loud, and we decline.
- **Do the two ledgers agree on one page?** The commercial ledger — what the brand does for the shelf, for the P&L, for the buyer, for the founder — has to sit next to the sovereign ledger — what the brand does for the shopper, the worker, the supplier, the category, the community — and both have to balance without either being asked to look away. If they don't, we rewrite the brief until they do. This is not ethics as marketing. This is architecture as engineering. A brand whose two ledgers disagree is a brand that will require a crisis-comms retainer in year three, and everybody in the boardroom will pretend to be surprised.
- **Would we stand behind this brand if we had to defend it out loud, on the record, to somebody who was already skeptical?** If the answer is *only with modifiers,* the brand isn't finished. Back on the bench.

# Mahna & Resolutionism in the Workshop — not sticky words, actual structure

Every brand that comes off this bench is carved to hold the same Resolutionism Four Tenets MYNS2 runs the whole practice by. They aren't marketing copy for the brand to say. They're structural properties the brand has to be. If the wood can't hold them, we recut the wood before we name it.

## Tenet 1: Create, Don't Extract

## Tenet 2: Align, Don't Dominate

## Tenet 3: See Reality, Not Illusion

## Tenet 4: Integrate Tension, Don't Deny It

- - - **The principle.** Some tensions in a brand are permanent. Premium vs. accessible. Craft vs. scale. Heritage vs. modern. Efficacy vs. gentleness. Individual expression vs. community belonging. Brands that promise to *resolve* every one of those tensions are selling the illusion of arrival, and arrival isn't a real place. Brands that *ride* the tension have somewhere interesting to stand for a decade.
          - **What it means for your brand.** We carve the productive tension*into* the brand instead of pretending it away. The brand doctrine names, out loud, the two forces the brand is holding — and treats the holding as the point, not the problem. A brand carved this way has somewhere to go in year three, year five, and year ten, because the tension keeps generating fresh material. A brand carved to deny its tension runs out of things to say by month eighteen and starts chasing whatever the category is chasing, which is the death of every brand that ever died on a shelf.
          - **The external effects.** Consumers feel this one at the identity level, even when they can't name it. A brand that holds tension gracefully becomes a brand consumers use to describe *themselves* — "I'm the kind of person who buys X" — because they, too, are holding paradoxes and are grateful for the company. That's the deepest loyalty a brand can earn. Retail buyers experience the same effect as *longevity on the shelf* — the brand doesn't burn out its story in eighteen months and require a full refresh. Category media has a beat to cover, because there's always a next chapter in the tension. Competitors can't clone the position, because tension-holding is a posture, not a feature list. This tenet, more than the other three, is what separates brands that *last* from brands that *trend.*

## A brand carved on all four tenets is a brand that doesn't require defending.

### IIt defends itself.

It defends itself, at shelf, in the press, in the boardroom, in the quiet moment a shopper picks it up for the second time. That is the whole point of the Workshop. Everything else — the naming, the voice, the visual world, the doctrine document, the design brief — is scaffolding around those four properties. If the four hold, the scaffolding does its job. If any of the four don't hold, no amount of scaffolding will save the brand from the market that is patiently waiting to find the seam.
